Help Desk - Problem Connecting to WiFi on Windows Laptop
Sometimes Windows machines use the local account (the one you log into the laptop with) and try to connect to wireless. This results in an authentication blacklist after five failed login attempts. This procedure will explain how to prevent your personal laptop from doing this.
Please note: Anywhere Titan WiFi is used in this document, Eduroam also applies
Windows Laptop Detailed Connection Procedure
Turn the wireless off on the laptop, it is typically signified as on by a blue light.
- Go to Start
- Control Panel
- Network and Sharing Center
- Manage Wireless Networks (look at the left side of the window)
- On the Home screen, choose the 'Search' icon from the charms bar which appears when the mouse is at the upper right corner of the screen and enter "Control Panel".
- Windows 8.1 users can right-click the Start button in the lower left and choose Control Panel instead.
- Open Control Panel, then select Network and Sharing Center
- Manage Wireless Networks' (look at the left side of the window)
In this list are all the wireless networks this laptop has connected to, right click and delete all networks not used on a regular basis.
- If Titan WiFi or Eduroam are in the list, delete them also
- Now click Add
- A window will pop up, select Manually create a network profile
- Under Network Name: type Titan WiFi or Eduroam, Security Type is WPA2-Enterprise
- Check the 'Start this connection automatically', then select 'Next'. There should be box with 'AES' already selected, make sure. Also type the SSID name exactly.
- Select 'Change connection settings'.
- Go to the 'Security Tab'. Select 'Settings'. Make sure that under 'Select Authentication Method', Secured password (EAP-MSCHAP v2) is selected, then click configure.
- Uncheck the 'Automatically use my Windows logon name...'.
- Click 'OK'. Click 'OK' again. This is a key step.
- Now go to 'Advanced Settings'. Check 'Specify authentication mode:'. Make sure that 'User authentication' is selected. Then click 'Save Credentials'. Now type in a valid 'NetID' and password.
- Click 'OK'. Click 'OK' again. Click 'OK' for a third time. Now click 'Close'.
- Turn the laptop wireless back on. Make sure that the laptop has selected 'Titan WiFi' or 'Eduroam' with the wireless.
If there are still problems connecting after doing all the above steps, connect to 'Titan WiFi Guest', with the laptop, open a browser, have the captive portal login pop up. Then without signing in connect back to 'Titan WiFi' or 'Eduroam'.
If there is a message about an untrusted certificate with the option of 'Terminate' or 'Connect', select 'Connect'. Windows does not trust any certificates for 802.1x connections by default.
One of the problems has been machines are getting locked out. When an authentication failure occurs five times, the wireless system locks out the device for about ten minutes. Wait ten minutes if the laptop will not connect.
