Microsoft Excel 2016 - Using the Menu System

This guide will show you what the functions of the various tabs in Excel are and what tools each tab contains.


There are various tabs available when Excel is opened. Here are the tabs and some of their various functions.

  • Home

    • This tab contains formatting tools and command features. Many of these are used frequently, such as decimal point placement and font size.
  • Insert

    • This is the tab where things such as tables and pivot tables are placed. Charts come from here as well, and hyperlinks can be placed.
  • Page Layout

    • This tab has contains tools such as themes, margins, and page orientation.
  • Formulas

    • This tab contains formula insert functions, suggestions for various financial and logical formulas, and many other formula items.
  • Data

    • This tab contains important data tools such as Sorting and Filtering as well as the What If? Analysis.
  • Review

    • This tab contains tools such as spell check, the thesaurus, and translations.
  • View

    • This tab contains tools which customize the excel window, such as having/not having the formula bar appear, zooming in and out, or freezing rows/columns.
  • File

    • This tab brings up the “backpage” view, which brings up options such as saving or printing.
