Microsoft Excel 2016 - Creating New Worbooks

This guide will show you various ways of creating new workbooks in Excel.


New Blank Workbook

Workbooks in Excel are the main files in which work is done. A new workbook opens automatically when first opening Excel. To open another new workbook while the program is open, select File > New Workbook. There are also shortcuts for doing this. On PC, Ctrl + N. On Mac, Cmd + N.

New Templated Workbook

Instead of creating just a new blank workbook, a new templated workbook can be added to make the creation and upkeep of an Excel Worksheet that much easier. Various things such as schedules, planners, budgets, and flowcharts can be created using templates.


  1. Select File tab.
  2. Select New from the “background menu”.
  3. Select the appropriate Workbook Template.

On Mac

  1. Select File > New from Template.
  2. Select the appropriate Workbook Template.
