iMovie - Using Transitions

This article details how to add transitions to an iMovie project.

Transitions are helpful to smoothly change between clips in the project instead of harshly switching from one to the next.

Adding and Adjusting Transitions

To add a transition to a clip, click Transitions under Content Library in the lower-left hand corner of iMovie, and then click and drag a transition from the Browser in between clips in the Project Timeline Pane.

To adjust the length of the transition, double-click on its icon and change the Duration field, or right click on the transition and choose Precision Editor. In this mode, the length of the transition can be adjusted by clicking and dragging the ends of the grey bar either above or below the clip. The time at which the transition occurs can be changed by clicking the middle of the grey bar and dragging left or right.

iMovie can automatically add transitions if desired, although it will prevent the user from customizing transitions.

  1. Go to Window > Movie Properties or press Command + J.
  2. Click Settings.
  3. Make sure a Theme is selected.
  4. Check the Automatic content box.

To remove a transition, click the transition icon and press Delete. To remove all transitions, choose Edit > Select in Movie > Transitions and press Delete.
