D2L ePortfolio - Embedding a YouTube Video

Instructions for embedding a YouTube video into ePortfolio. Students can upload a video to YouTube and insert the embed code into D2L ePortfolio in three easy main steps.

Step 1: Upload a Video to YouTube

  1. Login to YouTube with your uwosh.edu account information.
  2. Once you have logged in, click Upload at the top right of the screen (to the left of your e-mail address).
  3. Select a name for your channel. (If you already have a channel, skip this step.) Click Next.
  4. Click Select files from your computer.
  5. Find the desired file, then click Choose.
  6. While the video is being uploaded, adjust the title, description, tags, privacy settings, category and license to your wishes.
    • NOTE: The video will be done when the text next to the top thumbnail says "Upload complete!"

Step 2: Embed YouTube video in ePortfolio

  1. Open D2L in ANOTHER TAB or WINDOW.
  2. Access D2L ePortfolio.
  3. Click New > HTML File.
  4. Create a name for the new video.
  5. Click on the text editor box.
  6. Icons will appear within the box. At the bottom left-hand side of the box, click the Edit HTML Source icon. Edit html source icon A new window will appear.
  7. Go back to your new YouTube video.  Click on the link next to "Your video will be live at:".
  8. At the bottom of the video, click Share.
  9. Click Embed.
  10. A new box will appear beneath the embed button containing code. Below this is a check box "Use Old Embed Code." Tick this check box.
  11. Copy the text/code from the text box above the check boxes.
  12. Go back to D2L ePortfolio. Paste the text in the new window.
  13. Click Update to close the window.
  14. The video should be visible in the text editor box.
  15. Click Next.
  16. Add a description and tags as desired.
  17. Click Save.
  18. Click Done.
  19. Verify that your video is working properly by selecting Open File under the title.

Also note if you choose to use an external 3rd party service, please carefully consider what online identities, email addresses, or existing accounts you decide to use. It may be in your interest to create new accounts with these tools to associate with your studies and professional work.
