Classroom - General Technology Operation
The document is a guide to the general operation of classroom equipment.
General Operating Instructions for Classrooms
- Technology operation in general access classrooms is relatively consistent, with a few variations.
- Departmental classrooms, labs, as well as teaching labs may have different configurations.

Users' Guide - General Access Classrooms with Media Towers
- Turn on tower by pressing the main power switch on the Media Tower
- This turns on all equipment within the tower including amplification/audio
- When switch is on, it will illuminate or a light next to it will
- Turn on the projector by pressing the projector button (indicated with image or text) and hold for 3-5 seconds
- This process is also used when turning the projector off
- The projector will automatically display the last input utilized select the desired input if different
- Volume control for the projected media is controlled with the turn knob under the projector power button on the media tower
- Audio will only work in the classroom if the main power is switched on
- Turn projector off when finished
- Most classrooms have the following input options:
- Computer
- Laptop
- Document Camera
- DVD/VHS/Blu-Ray*
- Please review the directory of classrooms to verify which of these is in each classroom
- Select the desired input to display through the projector or, if audio only, through the in-house speakers
- Some classrooms have a cassette player input selection, if the cassette player is removed from the Media Tower for non-use it is not being replaced
- Turn on the classroom computer if not already on
- On Media Tower select PC, Mac, or an image of a computer
- Audio controls through the can influence the in-house speakers
- Classroom audio is controlled through the Media Tower though can also be adjusted through the computer
- Main Power button must be on for audio to emit through in-house speakers
- Restart the classroom computer when finished
- On Media Tower select Laptop or image of a laptop
- If using laptop, remember to bring any additional adaptors necessary for connecting the laptop to the projector
- Most connections are located underneath the chalk or white/marker board; some connections are attached to the equipment tower
- On Media Tower select button with desired equipment
- Please review the directory of classrooms to verify which of these is in each classroom
- Power switch on document camera must be switched on
- On the Media Tower, press button labeled Document Camera or an image of a document camera
- Adjust all document camera settings on the document camera
- When finished, turn off the document camera
- If a document camera is delivered to a classroom the laptop input selection must be selected
Users' Guide - Lecture Halls with Media Towers and Touch Panel Displays
Halsey Science Center 106
- The touch panel display is located on the lab table not teaching station. If black/blank touch any part of the screen to wake it up
- Select Begin to start session
- Press Left or Right to begin
- Left and right references are when facing the class not facing the chalk boards
- Select On under power to turn on the projector
- Repeat to power other projector by going selecting VPs across the top of the touch panel
- The Device Selection screen is native to the projector; if in the Left menu, the selected device will only appear on the left display
- To switch between device selections, select VPs across the top to switch projector input
- Select Lights on the Device Selection Screen (also available on Left or Right screen)
- Light options are:
- All On
- Present (only chalkboard lights are on in this mode)
- Video (back three rows of lights are dimmed in this mode)
- C. Board (will toggle chalkboard lights on and off)
- Off
- Volume controls are for all devices in the classroom and are located on the Device Selection screen
- Adjust volume by pressing up or down arrows
- Turn on computer if it is not already on
- Select Computer at Device Selection screen to display installed computer
- Volume control can operate through the computer as well as in-house speakers
If using laptop, remember to bring any additional adaptors necessary for connecting the laptop to the projector
- Connect laptop using VGA connection in teaching station
- If unsure how to extend or duplicate the display from the laptop to the projector consult the laptop's users' manual or this KnowledgeBase article.
- Select Laptop at the Device Selection Screen to display connected laptop
- Press Prev on touch panel to return to the Device Selection screen when finished
- Select DVD/VCR at Device Selection screen
- Press DVD or VCR on next screen to specify media type on device
- If necessary, press the open/close button to eject the disc tray, place media, and then close tray with the same button
- Utilize touch panel display to play, fast forward, or rewind media
- Select Prev to return to Device Selection screen
- Select Blu-Ray player at Device Selection screen
- Press the open/close button to eject the disc trap, place media, and then close tray with the same button
- Utilize touch panel display to play, fast forward, or rewind media
- Select Prev to return to Device Selection screen
- Power switch on document camera must be switched on
- Select Doc Cam on the Device Selection screen to display document camera
- A hand-held microphone as well as a lapel microphone is available for use; each device must be powered on separately from classroom equipment
- The microphone volume is controlled from the Device Selection screen in all menus except DVD/VCR
- Press Home and End on touch panel to end session
- Touch panel will read: "You are about to shut down the system. Are you sure you want to do that?" Click yes.
- Remember to restart the classroom computer
- Take all personal items especially flash drives and any adaptors
Halsey Science Center 107 & 109
- The touch panel display is now wired and located on the computer cart. If black/blank touch any part of the screen to wake it up.
- The Sources screen will appear once the session begins.
- Left and right references are when facing the class not facing the chalk boards
- Select Projector Power at the top of the touch panel display to turn on the projectors.
- Each projector must be turned on separately
- Select Sources to return to the source options
- Once again, left and right references are when facing the class not facing the chalk boards
- Screens will move down when a projector is powered on but can be raised or lowered as needed
- Screens will move up at the end of the session
- If the system was not shut down screens can be operated independently of the begin and end session options
- Select Go to Screens at the top of the screen to go to the screen submenu.
- There is an option to move both screen together or separately. The up arrow moves the screens up down moves the screens down.
- To adjust lighting selecting Lights on the touch panel display; options are:
- On
- Off
- Video (only three (3) back rows on)
- Present (front lights off
- There are also chalkboard light options:
- Left chalk board on
- Left chalk board off
- Right chalk board on
- Right chalk board off
- Volume controls are for all devices in the classroom and are located on the Sources screen
- Adjust volume by pressing up or down arrows above the Program Volume title
- Please note: when switching audio devices remember to stop playback. If played a VHS tape, as an example, the audio will continue until playback is paused/stopped.
- Turn on computer if it is not already on
- Select PC at sources screen to display installed computer
- Volume control can operate through the computer as through the touch panel display
- Connect laptop using VGA connection attached to the Media Tower
- If unsure how to extend or duplicate the display from the laptop to the projector consult the laptop's users' manual or this KnowledgeBase article
- Select Laptop at the Selection Screen to display connected laptop
- Select Blu-Ray at Sources screen
- All Blu-Ray functions are through the touch panel display
- Except the open/close button which is on the physical player
- Select Blu-Ray player at Selection screen
- Press the open/close button to eject the disc trap, place media, and then close tray with the same button
- Utilize touch panel display to play, fast forward, or rewind media
- Select DVD/VCR at Sources screen
- All DVD/VCR functions are through the touch panel display
- Except the open/close or eject buttons which are on the physical player
- Power switch on document camera must be switched on
- Select Doc Cam on the Device Selection screen to display document camera
- Microphones are available for use; each device must be powered on separately from classroom equipment
- The microphone is located in the drawer of the Media Tower.
- Volume is controlled from the all Source screen
- Press Home and End Session on touch panel to end session
- A second prompt with appear that states:
- Warning: You are about to shut down the system. Are you sure?"
- The options are Yes or No. Select the desired option.
- There is a significant amount of time before the system can be turned on while the projectors cool down once the projectors are turned off.
- The screen(s) will also go up once Yes is selected.
- Remember to restart the classroom computer
- Take all personal items especially flash drives, multimedia, or any adaptors
Nursing Education 151 & 152
- The touch panel is located on the computer cart. The screen will appear blank/black when idle, touch anywhere on the screen to wake it up.
- At the home screen select Begin Session
- Screen will automatically lower once begin session is selected
- At the source page, turn on the projector by selection On under the projector power text
- Select which source to project, it will highlight gold when selected
- Options are:
- DVD/VCR
- Computer
- Document Camera
- Laptop
- The light menu can be access in any menu by selecting the light bulb icon labelled Lights
- Presets are:
- All On
- Present - front row lights are off
- Video - all lights off except back row
- Off
- Select Sources to return to Source Selection screen
- Turn on computer if not already on
- Select Computer on Sources screen
- Note: sometimes computer is highlighted gold but not projecting, select any other source, and then switch back to computer to get it to display properly
- Volume control can be manipulated through the computer as well as on the touch panel display
- Connect laptop using VGA connection in teaching station
- If unsure how to extend or duplicate the display from the laptop to the projector consult the laptop's users' manual or this KnowledgeBase article.
- Select Laptop at the Sources screen to display connected laptop
- Select DVD/VCR at Sources screen
- If necessary, press the open/close button to eject the disc trap, place media, and then close tray with the same button
- Utilize touch panel display to play, fast forward, or rewind media
- Power switch on document camera must be switched on
- Select Doc Cam on the Sources screen to display document camera
- Lavalier microphones are available for use; each device must be powered on separately from classroom equipment
- Volume control of the microphones is on the touch panel display labelled Mic Vol Up, Mic Vol Down, or Mic Mute
- Press Home and End Session on touch panel to end session
- Remember to restart the classroom computer
- Take all personal items especially flash drives and any adaptors
Users' Guide - Sage Hall Classrooms
Sage Hall Classrooms
- The touch panel is located on the teaching station
- The screen will appear black/blank when idle; touch anywhere to wake it up
- Press Start to turn on the system
- Select On to turn on projector; prompt will state Busy Please Wait while projector warms up
- Projector will display University of Wisconsin Oshkosh wordmark until an input selection is made
- The input selected across the top of the touch panel will be projected unless Video Mute is selected in the projector menu
- Select On to turn on projector(s); prompt will state Busy Please Wait while projector warms up
- Projector 2: on the left facing the class
- Projector 1: on the right facing the class
- Projector will display University of Wisconsin Oshkosh wordmark until an input selection is made
- The top row of the touch panel features the source option. When selected each source will highlight orange
- When within a submenu, two buttons appear in the bottom left corner that dictate what signal is sent to the projector
- Any source can be projected from either projector. The same source can be sent to both screens.
- Note: If an external VHS player is brought into a classroom, it can only project through one projector. All other sources can project through both projectors.
- Audio is controlled by the Room Volume menu at the bottom of the touch panel screen
- Mic Volume options are only available in lecture halls (Sage Hall 1210, 1214, & 1216)
- The green microphone will turn red and mute the microphone when selected
- Select Audio Source to open up the audio submenu
- If Follow Projector 1 or Follow Projector 2 is selected whatever source is currently being projected at those sources will emit audio.
- If audio is desired by a source not being sent to the projector, select the desired audio source
- Desktop
- Turn the computer on when entering the classroom as it is not powered by the touch panel display
- Please restart the computer at the end of the session
- Laptop
- The laptop connection (VGA and audio) is available in the Cable Cubbie located on top of the teaching station
- Remember to bring any additional adaptors necessary for connecting the laptop to the projector
- Document Camera
- Turn on the document camera as it is not powered on by the touch panel display
- Two modes are available:
- Win displays a condensed Windows OS; is can project MS Office files from a flash drive
- Live displays the live camera image
- The Win/Live button toggles between the two modes
- Blu-Ray
- The Blu-Ray player is located in the media tower underneath the teaching station
- Can play DVDs, CDs, and Blu-Ray discs
- Other Sources
- Cable TV is not available in every room
- Composite and S-Video selections are for older format players
- VHS Players are not available in Sage Hall but can be connected to the system utilizing the composite source
- When a session begins the lights and shades will change to accommodate projection (lights dim, shades close)
- Common lighting choices are indicated by Presets 1 thru 4
- Shade control can be changed beyond the initial projection choice
- Selecting down, as an example, and then while shades are lowering selecting down again will stop the shades at their current level. This works for up as well.
- Select System Power in the bottom right hand corner to power off the system
- A prompt will appear on the touch panel to display to verify this action. Selecting Shutdown will shut down all the equipment in the room except the computer.
- Please restart the computer at the end of the session.
- Once Shutdown has been selected, the system cannot power on again until it has cooled down.
Sage Hall 1210 - Theater Mode
- Lecture Mode
- Operates like all other classrooms in Sage Hall. Guide here.
- Theater Mode
- Lowers a 15' screen
- The touch panel is located on the teaching station
- The screen will appear black/blank when idle; touch anywhere to wake it up
- Select Theater Mode
- While in Theater Mode only the Blu-Ray player in Sage Hall 1210 closet (1210A) can be displayed
- Press the open/close button to eject the disc tray, place media, and then close tray with the same button
- Utilize touch panel display to play, fast forward, or rewind media
- Select System Power in the bottom right hand corner to power off the system
- A prompt will appear on the touch panel to display to verify this action. Selecting Shutdown will shut down all the equipment in the room
- Once Shutdown has been selected, the system cannot power on again until it has cooled down
Users' Guide - General Access Classrooms with Minor Changes
These are rooms that have minor changes from General Access Classrooms with Media Towers. Most functionality is the same as the guide for those rooms and will be linked accordingly.
Arts and Communications Center S149
Please refer to the General Access Classroom guide for basic operation instructions- There are two (2) projectors connected to one (1) computer and the images overlap if both projectors are on
- The smaller/front projector displays over a chalkboard staff in the classroom
- To power on and utilize this projector follow the General Access Classroom guide
- The larger/back projector projects a 12' image and must be powered on via remote (located on computer cart)
- Only the computer connection can display through this projector
- Audio is controlled through the Media Tower by pressing the selection labeled "iMac"
- If image is not displayed, select RGB1 on remote control
- The motorized screen switch for the 12' image is located on the left of the chalkboard
- If the large screen is lowered, the 7' screen for the smaller/front projector cannot be lowered
- Please restart the computer and power off the projector at the end of the session
Polk Library 017
There is no Media Tower in this classroom and it therefore has limited functionality. The only technology in this classroom is: a computer, a short-throw lens projector, and an Eno interactive whiteboard.
- If needed, turn on classroom computer if not already on
- Locate the projector remote, located on the computer cart, and press On
- If the computer image does not display, select RGB1 on the projector remote
- Audio is adjusted through the speakers mounted on the projector cart
- Computer audio can influence the audio emitted through the speakers
- The Eno interactive whiteboard software is installed on the classroom computer and can be utilized by anyone in the classroom
- The board is used as a reflective surface for the projector, can be interacted with via stylus, and can be used as a white/marker board
- Please restart the computer and power off the projector at the end of the session
Polk Library 020 & 022
- The touch panel is located on the computer cart. The screen will appear blank/black when idle, touch anywhere on the screen to wake it up.
- At the projector selection screen there are two options - select one to go to each submenu
- Whiteboard projector
- This is the SMART board projector that displays at the side of the classroom
- The DVD/VHS Unit cannot project on this screen
- Screen projector
- This is the projector that displays to the front of the classroom
- Turn the projector on in the menu by selection On in the lower left hand corner.
- To turn on the other projector press the Prev button and select the other projector to get to that projectors selection screen
- To switch to the other projector to see that projectors source options use the same method
- All other sources operate the same as other general access classrooms
- To shut down the system press Prev and select Shutdown on the touch panel
- A second prompt will appear to verify this action select Yes to shut down the system
- Both projectors will shut down at this screen, there is no need to shut them both down individually
- Please restart the computer at the end of the session
Users' Guide - Active Learning Classrooms
Polk Library 019
- The touch panel is located on the computer cart, press Start to begin
- The touch panel will display the sources page, all the available inputs (or sources) is along the top of the screen
- Available sources are:
- Laptop - HDMI connection available
- PC - desktop computer provided in classroom
- DVD - Blu-Ray player; can play DVDs (VHS player not available for this classroom)
- Doc Cam - collapsed in Media Tower in room - slides out
- To turn on the digital displays in the classroom select On on the left hand since of the sources page
- Any source selected across the top of the screen will be pushed to the five (5) digital displays in the classroom
- To allow each table to have group work, select the Group Work button across the top of the touch panel
- This selection will allow each group to work independently of one another
- To force one group's work onto all of the digital displays, select that group's monitor and it will appear on all screens
- Screens are arranged in descending order from the front right display
- To return to sharing the instructor's station, select any input along the top of the touch panel display
- To shut down the system select the button System Off in the lower left hand corner and then Power Down

- The touch panel is located near the installed computer
- When the touch panel is idle it will appear blank/black; touch the screen anywhere to activate it
- Select Start to begin
- All digital displays in the classroom will power on when start is pressed
- Digital displays can be turned on or off individually on the screen.
- If the TV Power button is illuminated red, the digital display is off.
- If the TV Power button is illuminated green, the digital display is on.
- Active learning classrooms can only have two (2) displays selected at any given time to display to the digital displays in the classroom.
- The two (2) selections currently chosen appear at the top of the touch panel display
- To change what two (2) sources are selected, press Setup Instructor Station Inputs in the upper right hand side of the screen
- Options are:
- Desktop
- Blu-ray
- Laptop
- Document Camera
- AirMedia
- One device will have to be unselected in order to select a different input.
- To return to previous screen, select Return to Main Video Routing
- To send a source to a digital display, select the desired source in the upper left hand corner and then select:
- Send to All to display the desired input on all of the displays
- Or select the desired stations (Station 1, Station 2, etc.) to receive the desired input
- The number of digital displays ranges from four (4) to six (6)
- Each station can also display its local input. Select Stations to Local Input to allow students to connect to the digital displays
- To have a local input appear on every display, select the desired station (e.g. Station 1) and select Send to All. To regain control of all stations, select the desired input across the top (e.g. Desktop) and select Send to All.
- If Blu Ray is selected as a desired input a second set of controls will appear in the top menu.
- All Blu Ray player functionality is through the touch panel including the open and closing of the tray.
- If Doc Cam is selected all functionality is through the document camera itself
- The document camera is collapsed inside the teaching station
- Please return the document camera to its collapsed state at the end of use
- If AirMedia is selected as a desired input a second set of controls will appear in the top menu
- Mobile devices (laptops, tablets, phones) can project wirelessly utilizing Crestron AirMedia. An app is available for iOS and Android devices. For laptops, follow the directions on the digital displays.
- No image will appear on the digital displays until is has been released on the touch panel. As devices are connected, the names will appear on the touch panel. For a source to project, select the desired method (full screen, upper left, upper right, lower left, lower right) and continue through all users.
- It is encouraged that users have a working knowledge of AirMedia before using it in the classrooms to make the use of it seamless. HDMI and VGA connections are also available for laptop connectivity. Be sure to bring any adapters necessary if utilizing wired connections.
- Audio controls are at the bottom of every screen
- Select the up and down arrows to raise and lower the volume
- The Audio On/Off button is utilized when muting the volume. The button will appear red when muted.
- The Group Discussion button will activate white noise to make discussion at each station easier.
- The audio will gradually turn on when initially selection and gradually turn off when selected again
- Select System Power in the lower right hand corner.
- A second window will appear to finalize the process.
- Cancel will close the window and return to the previous screen
- Shutdown will shutdown the system
- In no selection is made, at the end of the countdown, the system will shut down
- Please restart the computer at the end of the session
- The touch panel is located on the height-adjustable desk
- When the touch panel is idle it will appear blank/black; touch the screen anywhere to activate it
- Select Start to begin
- The projector screen will be first the prompt
- On will turn the projector on
- Off will turn the projector off
- Show Image is used to mute the projector
- When the button is red, the projected image is muted
- Device selection options are across the top of the screen
- Options are:
- Desktop
- Laptop
- Doc Camera
- Blu-Ray
- AirMedia
- Camera (only available in the lecture halls)
- To send an input selection to one or both of the projectors, select an input (e.g. Desktop) and select Send to Projector 1 or Send to Projector 2 on the right hand side of the touch panel
- The projectors can project the same image or different images
- All Blu-Ray player functionality is through the touch panel including the open and closing of the tray
- All Doc Camera functionality is on the document camera itself (including power in the lecture halls)
- Mobile devices (laptops, tablets, phones) can project wirelessly utilizing Crestron AirMedia. An app is available for iOS and Android devices. For laptops, follow the directions on the digital displays.

- A second window will appear to finalize the process.
- Cancel will close the window and return to the previous secreen
- Shutdown will shutdown the system
- If no selection is made, at the end of the countdown, the system will shut down.
- Please restart the computer at the end of the session.
