Titan Apps - Importing emails to another Gmail account

Instructions on how to import emails from a university email to a regular Gmail account.

Importing emails to another Gmail account is helpful upon leaving the university, as email accounts are disabled after a certain point, or for a number of other reasons.

Setting up the exporting email address

First, the email from which you want to export emails needs to have POP settings enabled in order to be able to transfer emails.

  1. Go to gmail.com and sign into the account.
  2. Go to https://my account.google.com/security
  3. Scroll down to the bottom of the page where it says "Allow less secure apps: OFF (this needs to be turned on)

  4. Click on the right side of the circle to move it over to the ON position
  5. Scroll back to the top of the screen > Click on the Google AppsGoogleApps button
  6. Click the gear in the top-right corner and choose Settings.

  7. Choose the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab and make sure the bubble that says "Enable POP for all mail" is checked.

  8. Click Save Changes.

Setting up the destination Gmail account

Next, the settings in the destination Gmail account need to be changed to move all the emails over.

  1. Sign out of the campus account and sign into the personal account.
  2. Click the gear in the top-right corner and choose Settings.
  3. Choose the Accounts tab and click on Add a POP3 mail account you own.

  4. Enter the @uwosh.edu email address and click Next Step.

  5. Change the settings in the next window.
    1. Enter the password for the university account.
    2. Click the dropdown next to POP Server, choose enter pop.gmail.com
    3. Make sure the Port is listed as 995.
    4. Leave the "Always use a secure connection" option checked and check the other options depending on preference.

  6. On the next screen, choose No and click Finish. After the @uwosh.edu account is disabled, you will not be able to send or receive mail as that account.
    Final step
The mail from the @uwosh.edu account will start populating in the destination email address. It is not instantaneous and could take a few minutes.

Other steps to take if your @uwosh.edu account will be disabled soon

Make sure to contact employers, email lists, and any other place where you have given your @uwosh.edu email account and update them with your @gmail. address. You will not be able to forward new emails from your @uwosh.edu account after the account is disabled.

Common errors and mistakes

  1. Error message: "We were unable to locate the other domain. Please contact your other provider."
    Solution: Enter the correct POP server (pop.gmail.com) and settings as indicated in step #5 above.

  2. Error message: "Web login required."
    Solution: Enable less secure apps on your @uwosh.edu account, instructions are at the top of this document
