Adobe Photoshop - Free Transform

This document gives you the basic structure of a How To template

VIDEO

Free Transform is a collection of tools that can be used to easily manipulate the shape and distortion of an image. This is a great tool to use for changing the appearance of an image without changing the color.

To Select an Area for Free Transform:

To Select a Layer:

  • Click the layer to be transformed.
    • If the layer to be transformed is a Background layer it needs to be changed to an editable layer. To change the background layer into an editable layer, double-click on it from the Layers panel and press Return or Enter.

To Make a Selection using the Marquee Tool:

  1. Select the Marquee tool from the Tools menu, or press the M key.
  2. Click and drag over the image to make a selection denoted by the “marching ants”.
  3. Release the mouse once desired area of the image is selected.

Using Free Transform

  1. Once your selection or layer is created, the Free Transform option will be available in three different ways:
    • by selecting the Edit menu
    • right clicking on your selection or layer
    • using the keyboard shortcut Command + T for Mac or Control + T for windows
  2. If one specific transformation is needed, select Transform from the Edit menu and choose the transformation needed.
  3. After the image has free transform applied, adjustment boxes will appear in the corners and midpoints of each edge.

To Scale an image:

  1. Click one of the corner boxes so the diagonal double sided arrow appears.
  2. Drag the image to the scale desired. To constrain the scale, hold the Shift key while dragging the mouse.
  3. Once the desired rotation is added, let go of the mouse button.
  4. Skip to Finalize Changes if no other transformations are needed.

To Rotate an image:

  1. Hold mouse slightly outside of the transformation box so the curved double sided arrow appears.
  2. Click and drag to rotate.  To rotate in 15 degree increments, hold the Shift key while dragging the mouse.
  3. Once the desired rotation is added, let go of the mouse button.
  4. Skip to Finalize Changes if no other transformations are needed.

To Skew an image:

  1. Right click on the image to show the context-sensitive menu, and select Skew.
  2. Click and drag the midpoint boxes to skew the image.
  3. Once the desired skew is added, let go of the mouse button.
  4. Skip to Finalize Changes if no other transformations are needed.

To Distort an image:

  1. Right click on the image to show the context-sensitive menu, and select Distort.
  2. Click and drag one of the corner boxes to distort the image. To keep one side straight while adjusting the other, hold the Shift key.
  3. Once the desired distortion is added, let go of the mouse button.
  4. Skip to Finalize Changes if no other transformations are needed.

To put Perspective in an image:

  1. Right click on the image to show the context-sensitive menu, and select Perspective.
  2. Click and drag one of the corner boxes to modify perspective on that side of the image. Moving left and right will change the perspective of the top or bottom, and moving up and down will change the perspective of the left or right.
  3. Once the desired perspective is added, let go of the mouse button.
  4. Skip to Finalize Changes if no other transformations are needed.

To Warp an image:

  1. Right click on the image to show the context-sensitive menu, and select Warp.
  2. Click and drag the boxes on the outside of the transformation or the places where the grid intersects.
  3. Once the desired warp is added, let go of the mouse button.
  4. Skip to Finalize Changes if no other transformations are needed.

To Finalize the changes:

  • Select the ✓ from the top menu, or press the Return or Enter key on a keyboard.
