Adobe Illustrator - Understanding Fill and Stroke

This guide will show you how to utilize the Fill and Stroke properties.

VIDEO

A fill is a color, pattern, or gradient inside an object. Fills can be applied to open and closed objects and to faces of Live Paint groups.
A stroke can be the visible outline of an object, a path, or the edge of a Live Paint group.
Controls for setting the fill and stroke of an object are available in the Tools panel, the Control panel, and the Color panel.

Apply a Fill

  1. Select an object using the Selection tool or the Direct Selection tool.
  2. Click the Fill box in the Tools panel or the Color panel. Doing so indicates that you want to apply a fill rather than a stroke.
    1. If the Fill box is active it will be above the stroke box
    2. Select a fill color by doing one of the following:
      1. Double-click the Fill button to select a fill color using the Color Picker
        • Single-click to open the swatches panel to choose a color.
      2. Shift+click to open the color mode panel and choose a color from the dialogue.
      3. Click  to swap colors between the fill and stroke.
      4. Click the gradient to change the selected fill to the last selected gradient
      5. Choose none to remove the selected object’s fill properties.

The Stroke Panel

For more control over the stroke of an object open the Stroke panel.

  1. If the stroke panel is not showing choose Window from the file menu and then select Stroke.
  2. Or simply click the word stroke in the control panel.
  3. If the object is a closed path (and not a Live Paint group), choose an option from the Stroke panel to align the stroke along the path:
    • Align Stroke To Center
    • Align Stroke To Inside
    • Align Stroke To Outside
  4. Also choose whether or not the stroke is dashed, and how the stroke will appear, within the stroke panel.
