Audacity - Importing Audio

This document gives you instructions on how to to upload existing audio into an Audacity project or create a new project.

Audacity can open many of the most common file formats including WAV, AIF, MP3, etc.

Create a new project

  1. Select File, then Open  … or use the keyboard shortcut of Cmd + O (Mac) or Ctrl + O (Windows).
  2. Navigate to where the audio file is stored.
  3. Select the audio file to be imported
  4. Double click on the audio file to import it.

If the file is an uncompressed file, such as a WAV file, you will see a message telling you about the option to either copy the file into the project or leaving the original file untouched on the desktop. Option 1 is faster while Option 2 is safer as it doesn’t change the original file.

Adding a file to an existing project

To add an audio file to an existing project, follow the same steps as creating a new project except when you select File, then select Import > Audio
