Audacity - Importing Audio
This document gives you instructions on how to to upload existing audio into an Audacity project or create a new project.
Audacity can open many of the most common file formats including WAV, AIF, MP3, etc.
Create a new project
- Select File, then Open … or use the keyboard shortcut of Cmd + O (Mac) or Ctrl + O (Windows).
- Navigate to where the audio file is stored.
- Select the audio file to be imported
- Double click on the audio file to import it.
If the file is an uncompressed file, such as a WAV file, you will see a message telling you about the option to either copy the file into the project or leaving the original file untouched on the desktop. Option 1 is faster while Option 2 is safer as it doesn’t change the original file.
Adding a file to an existing project
To add an audio file to an existing project, follow the same steps as creating a new project except when you select File, then select Import > Audio.
