Audacity - Setting Up Your Hardware

This document gives you instructions so that will be able to make sure your computer and equipment are set up properly for recording audio.

Whether a Mac or a PC is being used, there are different connector ports for connecting the recording equipment. Because of this, it is suggested to use USB Audio Input Devices, such as USB microphones or USB devices with various audio input ports.

Changing Device Input

Once the proper device has been connected to the computer, the device must be made the preferred recording device inside Audacity.

  1. On Mac, select Audacity, then select Preference from the drop down menu. On Windows, select Edit, then select Preferences from the drop down menu.
  2. From the Menu on the side of the pop-up window, select Devices.
  3. In the Devices window, select the drop-down menu to the right of “Device”, underneath “Recording”. Select the device being used to record the audio.
  4. The audio output can also be changed by selecting the drop-down menu to the right of “Device”, underneath “Playback”.
