Audacity - Cutting, Copying, and Pasting

This document gives you a walkthrough of portions of audio around.

Continuing with the word processing analogy, audio can be cut, copied, and pasted just like text in a word processor. This is likely the most common type of editing in Audacity.

  1. Using the Selection Tool, select the portion of audio desired.
  2. To copy, select Edit and then select Copy from the drop-down menu. Alternatively, the keyboard shortcut for copying is Command + C on a mac or Control + C on a PC.
  3. To paste, select Edit and then select Paste from the drop-down menu. Alternatively, the keyboard shortcut for copying is Command + V on a mac,  or Control + V on a PC.
  4. To cut audio instead of pasting, select Edit and then select Cut from the drop-down menu. Alternatively, the keyboard shortcut for cutting is Command + X on a mac or Control + X on a PC.
  5. If the desired effect of the cut is not to shift the remaining audio over the cut portion and to instead leave a gap, select Edit and then select Remove Special. From the pop-up menu, select Split Cut. Alternatively, the keyboard shortcut for split-cutting is Command + Option + X on a mac and Ctrl + Alt + X on a PC.
