Audacity - Splitting Clips

This document gives you the basic steps on How To split clips in a variety of ways.

As mentioned in the previous lesson, portions of clips can be deleted from tracks by cutting. If a Split Cut is chosen, then the remaining audio on the track is split into two clips. Splitting a clip without cutting audio can also be done.

Splitting Clips

  1. Using the Selection Tool, select the desired split point in the clip.
  2. Select Edit, then Clip Boundaries. From the pop-up menu, select Split. Alternatively, use the keyboard shortcuts Command + I on the mac or Control + I on the PC.
  3. If the desired effect is to put the split clip onto it’s own track, then before editing, select Edit, then Clip Boundaries, then select Split New from the pop-up menu. Alternatively, use the keyboard shortcuts of Command + Option + I on a mac or Control + Alt + I on a PC.

Joining Clips

  1. Using the Selection Tool, select portions of each clip which should be joined together.
  2. Select Edit, then Clip Boundaries. From the pop-up menu, select Join. Alternatively, use the keyboard shortcuts Command + J on the mac or Ctrl + J on the PC. These will join the clips and create silence in the areas which had originally been between the two clips.
  3. If the silence is not desired, then before Joining the clips, use the Time Shift Tool and drag the two clips together.
