Adapters - Commonly used adapters to connect to external displays

This document provides adapters commonly used to connect to external displays (projectors, monitors, televisions, etc.)

Adapters

  1. HDMI to VGA
    • Often used when a laptop has an HDMI output but the device only has VGA connections available
    • An additional audio cable will be needed if audio is desired
    • Used for both Macs and PCs
  2. DisplayPort to VGA
    • PCs use this to connect to devices with VGA output
    • An additional audio cable will be needed if audio is desired
  3. Mini DisplayPort (Thunderbolt) to HDMI
    • Mac computers use this to connect to devices with HDMI connections
    • Audio will also be carried through this connection
  4. Mini DisplayPort (Thunderbolt) to VGA
    • Mac computers use this to connect to devices with VGA connections
    • An additional audio cable will be needed if audio is desired
  5. DisplayPort to HDMI
    • PCs use this to connect devices with HDMI connections
    • Audio will also be carried through this connection
