WordPress - About
This document describes what WordPress is and what it does.
WordPress is an open source software platform that is designed for everyone, emphasizing accessibility, performance, security, and ease of use. WordPress powers 32% of the internet. WordPress can be used in many different types of web-based applications ranging from blogs, eCommerce, complex portals, enterprise websites, and more. WordPress makes content management very easy and no knowledge of web programming is required to use it, so maintenance is easy! Here are some of the features that WordPress has that makes it a great platform for UW-Oshkosh:
- Publish with Ease
If you’ve ever created a document, you’re already a whizz at creating content with WordPress. You can create Posts and Pages, format them easily, insert media, and with the click of a button your content is live and on the web.
- Publishing Tools
WordPress makes it easy for you to manage your content. Create drafts, schedule publication, and look at your post revisions. Make your content public or private, and secure posts and pages with a password.
- User Management
Not everyone requires the same access to your website. Administrators manage the site, editors work with content, authors and contributors write that content, and subscribers have a profile that they can manage. This lets you have a variety of contributors to your website, and let others simply be part of your community.
- Media Management
They say a picture says a thousand words, which is why it’s important for you to be able to quickly and easily upload images and media to WordPress. Drag and drop your media into the uploader to add it to your website. Add alt text, captions, and titles, and insert images and galleries into your content. We’ve even added a few image editing tools you can have fun with.
- Full Standards Compliance
Every piece of WordPress generated code is in full compliance with the standards set by the W3C. This means that your website will work in today’s browser, while maintaining forward compatibility with the next generation of browser. Your website is a beautiful thing, now and in the future.
- Extendable with Plugins
WordPress comes packed full of features for every user, for every other feature there’s a plugin directory with thousands of plugins. Add complex galleries, social networking, forums, social media widgets, spam protection, calendars, fine-tune controls for search engine optimization, and forms.
- Built-in Comments
Your blog is your home, and comments provide a space for your friends and followers to engage with your content. WordPress’s comment tools give you everything you need to be a forum for discussion and to moderate that discussion.
- Search Engine Optimized
WordPress is optimized for search engines right out of the box. For more fine-grained SEO control, there are plenty of SEO plugins to take care of that for you.

- WordPress Environments
We have several separate environments, each with a unique purpose.
- Learning (learnwp.uwosh.edu)
This environment gives users a safe place to play around with and test the UW-Oshkosh WordPress system. This is a safe place to try new or advanced functionality without the risk of messing up the site you care about.
- Test (wwwtest.uwosh.edu)
An environment for IT and UMC developers at UW-Oshkosh to do their work.
- Development (wwwdev.uwosh.edu)
An environment clients can use to work on major changes to websites without the risk or need of altering their production website. All sites on the Production environment have a duplicate (although probably out of sync) with the development environment.
- Production (uwosh.edu)
The environment where all live websites for UW-Oshkosh live. Changes to sites in this environment should be small and made carefully.
- WordPress Account Types
There are 3 different types of account types in our multisite environment. There are more account types in WordPress, however we do not use them. We only use the types listed below.
This user has administrative access to one or more WordPress sites. Administrators are capable of changing any page, post, or form. Administrators are capable of seeing any form submission data on your website. Each WordPress site can have multiple administrators.
- Site Owner
Site Owners have the same capabilities as Administrators, but are tasked with owning the data collected by their site via Gravity Forms, and granting new administrators access to the website they own. Each WordPress site has one site owner. A current list of each site owner can be found in this Google Sheet. Important note: Student employee accounts and shared email addresses cannot be site owners.
- Super Admin
Super Admins have the highest level of authority in the WordPress system. This account type is reserved for specialized staff members in the IT or UMC departments. Super Admins are able to view all multisite settings and have administrative access on every WordPress site in the network.
- Who can have administrator access?
Academic staff, Faculty, and student employees are able to have administrator access to any WordPress site as long as the Site Owner approves.
- Software Updates
WordPress core, theme, and plugin updates are all handled by UW-Oshkosh & UW-Milwaukee, so you never need to worry about keeping your site up to date.
- Scheduled Maintenance
The Production WordPress environment maintenance window is every Friday from 5:30 AM to 6:00 AM. The Test, Development, Learning environment maintenance window is every Tuesday from 2:30 PM to 3:00 PM.
